You shot this morning.
Maybe not at the YMCA. But you sent the message. Made the intro request. Pitched the room. Put something out there.
You visualized it going through. You’ve been doing that part well — seeing the outcome, building toward it, getting yourself to the line. That’s not nothing. Most people never step up.
But here’s what I watched this morning at the gym.
Someone would shoot, miss, and pause. Not a long pause. Just enough. Enough to let the miss mean something it shouldn’t. Enough to break the rhythm.
The best players don’t pause. They’re already moving toward the rebound before the ball hits the rim.
That pause is where new business dies.
You’re working the front end. You’re building relationships, asking for introductions, getting into rooms. You know how to visualize the close — you can see the deal, the partnership, the yes. That part is working.
But one non-reply and you slow down. One intro that goes quiet and you wonder if the approach is wrong. One meeting that doesn’t convert and you start rebuilding the shot instead of just shooting again.
This is what I call Chaotic Traction — you’re in motion, you’re getting signals, but the momentum is sporadic because the rhythm breaks after every miss.
You’re not stuck. You’re just pausing too long between attempts.
The visualization isn’t the problem. The recovery rate is.
Here’s the thing about free throws.
You don’t figure them out by thinking harder between shots. You figure them out by shooting more of them. The feedback is in the repetition, not the reflection.
Same with new business. Same with the pitch. Same with the follow-up you’ve been sitting on.
The miss already happened. The question is how fast you’re back at the line.
Gut check: Where are you pausing right now?
Not where are you stuck — you’re not stuck. Where are you slowing down after a miss that didn’t actually mean what you think it meant?
Go back up.
Gratefully,
Edwin
P.S. If this hit close to home, I want to hear about it. What’s the shot you’ve been sitting on? Reply and tell me where you are on the arc.
