How to Know You're in Momentum
Why your top 5 text messages might say more about your growth than your pitch deck
I was just thinking—and sometimes that’s all it takes.
A quiet moment, a glance at your phone, and you realize:
Something’s shifted.
Last week has been all green lights.
I spoke with an economic development center, and they offered me two speaking gigs.
I met with a new friend who manages innovation and pitched them a win-win idea to move forward on my growth strategy.
And in a beautiful twist, my new friend, whom I met in Vancouver, is now connecting me with three people from the organization to help me gain exposure in Europe.
A door opens,
then another.
Momentum.
But here’s what really struck me.
I looked at my phone.
My SMS text messages.
Out of my top five conversations, four are with people I just met recently.
Not my day ones.
Not my family.
Not my long-time friends.
New people. New energy. New orbit.
It reminded me of something I said in a talk years ago:
“Open up your messages.
Your top 5 tells you everything.
If it's all the same people you’ve known forever,
you’re not moving.”
When you’re in your POV—when it’s real and resonant—you don’t just talk about it.
You start having new conversations.
That’s the signal.
Not the vanity metrics.
Not the flashy announcements.
Who’s texting you.
Who’s asking for your time.
Who wants to build something with you.
That’s where the signal lives.
So, here’s my invitation to you:
Check your top 5. (do it now)
Are they expanding?
Are they evidence of movement, growth, curiosity?
If not, don’t panic.
Just recalibrate.
Get out there. Share your POV.
Momentum comes to the ones in motion.
Gratefully,
Edwin
